James R. Pope was born in Detroit, Michigan to Afreda Dunbar Pope and the late James Pope Jr with a sweet, easy going attitude and a zest for life. James was known to his family as "Lil James" (which he hated) and J.P. to his friends and colleagues. James received his formal education through the Detroit Public School System. He received a Dental Technician Technical Diploma from Milwaukee Area Technical College. James had passion for cooking which he got from his father, "Big James". He began his professional career with McCormick & Schmick's. Over the next 14 years, James cultivated his culinary and leadership skills and moved up the ranks to a leadership position. Always up for a new challenge and adventure, James accepted the opportunity to open a new flagship restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he served as Kitchen Supervisor and Trainer. He perfected his craft at a number of other high-end establishments over the years. James was a kind, funny and sweet soul who loved his mother and grandmother. He liked to remind his cousins that he was grandma's favorite. His smile and energy brought joy and laughter to any room he entered. He lived his life as a bachelor and a gentleman. A true class act and all around good guy with a good heart. James was baptized at Mt. Sion Missionary Baptist Church under the late Pastor Ralph Milhouse. James departed this life on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Beaumont Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan when the Lord called him home to rest. James father, James Pope Jr. preceded him in death.
