Timothy Charlton Obituary

Timothy Wayne Charlton was born August 14, 1953 in Bluefield, West Virginia. He was the 9th if 10 children and the 6th son of the late Jesse Cecil and Reba M. Clayborne Graves Charlton. he attended Tazwell County Elementary School in Bluefield, Virginia; Rocky Gap High School, Rocky Gap, Virginia; and Bluefield High School, Bluefield, WV.

Tim grew up in Tynes Chapel AME Zion Church where he was raised to love and serve the Lord. His love of singing blossomed as a member of the children's choir. Tim was skinny, rambunctious little boy who always loved singing. At the age of 7, he lead his first song, "People get ready there's a train coming". This led him singing with many groups in the church and the surrounding areas. He also was a self taught guitarist but it never overshadowed his singing.

After graduation, Tim served two years in the United States Marines Corp. After serving his stint in the Marines he returned home to Bluefield for several months before moving to Detroit, Michigan in 1976. In 1977, Tim joined the Wayne County Sheriff Department where she worked for 30 years before retiring in 2007.

For over 23 years, Timothy was a faithful member of Saint City COGIC where he served as a Deacon, Assistant to the Bishop, choir member and security officer for Whitehead Memorial. Although Timothy's health would not allow him to serve in those capacities any longer, he did not and would not allow his health issues stop him from attending Sunday School and church giving God praise. He loved to sing and continued to do so until his death. The last song he sang in church was "I thank you Jesus because you brought me from a mighty long way". Timothy never complained about anything but would encourage those who called him on the phone to serve God, love him and love others. With all of his hearts, Timothy loved his family; his church family; his Pastor and First Lady.

He would do anything to make sure they were taken care of. He touched the lives of so many with his smile, his words of encouragement and his example of not allowing his sickness to stop him or keep him from doing the work of the Lord. Timothy Wayne Charlton departed this life on Thursday, December 7, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents Jessie Cecil and Reba Mae Charlton; five brothers: Ronald William, Sherman, Lowell, and Jesse.
