Nora Drew Obituary

Nora Lee Sweeten was born on July 18th, 1931 in Republic, Alabama to Carrie Peoples and Noah Sweeten, who preceded her in death. She was the last of 18 brothers and sisters who preceded her in death. She was raised Catholic and attended Catholic Schools until her father was no longer able to continue to raise her and she moved to Bessemer, Alabama as a teenager and completed her education in Alabama Public Schools.

An educator from Detroit, Michigan offered Nora the opportunity to move to Detroit in the late 1940's where she quickly demonstrated her academic ability and received a scholarship to study nursing in Windsor, Canada, where she earned Certification as an LPN rising to the level of Head Nurse at numerous Nursing Homes during her career.

While living in Detroit she met and married (1952) James Edward Drew of Nashville, Tennessee, the Love of her Life until and after his passing in 2008. Upon moving to Westland, Michigan in 1956, Nora joined Springhill Missionary Baptist Church where she became an active Sunday school teacher and supporter of the church.

Nora was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. She made her transition on March 13th at 4:31 am at Beaumont Wayne (Annapolis) hospital after suffering debilitating illness in January 2018. Nora leaves to mourn and cherish her memory: son; Barney O'neal Drew (Oana); daughter; Guesselda Lee Drew; grandchildren: Bernard (Christel), Marcus, Shemeda (James), Edward, Andreea (Sergio), and Vlad. Great-grandchildren; Heavenlee Nora, Cara, and Joshua. She also had a host of nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends who celebrate her life.

On behalf of the family, we would like to recognize and to thank her friends, Norma Tyus and Bobby Schropshire for their dedicated friendship and support following the passing of James Drew.
