Marian Shelton Obituary

Marian Elizabeth Gilreath Shelton, the eldest of nine children born to Robert and Milton Gilreath, April 4, 1921, in Vivian, West Virginia. She married Abraham P. Shelton, on October 11, 1941. She was not a natural mother, but she lovingly raised a nephew Darroll, from 6 months to 35 years old.

She was educated in McDowell County Public Schools, graduated Salutatorian Class of 1937, Kimball High School. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education; Majors in Mathematics, Business Principles, and Occupational Commerce from West Virginia State College (University), June 1941.

Marian was employed as a Bookkeeper-Office Chief of Finance, for the War Department, Washington D.C., August 1942 to February 1943; Editor of Employment Compensation Commission, New York, June 1943 to September 1943; Statistician Surgeon General's Office, Washington D.C., November 1943 to August 1944; Secondary Teacher, Kimball High School, September 1944 to November 1946; Leasing Public Agent of Housing Administration, Willow Run Michigan, February 194 to June 1954; Administration Assistant, Professional Services, VA Hospital, Ann Arbor Michigan, June 1954 to June 1955;Educational Therapist-VA Hospital Dearborn Michigan, June 1955 to June 1960; Adult Education Instructor-Inkster High School, September 1960 to June 1962; Secretary, Administrative Assistant, Associate in Research, Recorder, Office Manager, Student Affairs Complex and Registrar- U of M School of Public Health, April 1963 to April 1979.

Her affiliations are many which include the following: organizer and President- The Inkster Unit of Church Women United-1977 to 1995. Marian was the founder of Church Women United in the city of Inkster which was chartered May 10, 1975. She was recognized as "Valiant Woman" in the State of Michigan for Church Women United until her health failed her. Organizer and Charter Member Eta lota Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, 1960 to present; Charter Member, Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. Michigan Metro Chapter, 1983 to present; Ladies of Adventure Chapter Red Hat Society and member of People's Community Baptist Church, 1970 to present.

She received the following awards: Golden K. Award, Kimball High School Alumni Association; Valiant Woman, Church Women United 1986; Outstanding Soror Award, Eta lota Omega Chapter AKA 1986, Outstanding Graduate Soror Award, Eta, lota Omega Chapter AKA 1986; Top lady of the Year, Top Ladies Distinction, Inc., Michigan Metro Chapter 2000, National Registrar, Who's who in Executives and Professionals 2004-2005; Golden Soror (Second Place) Great Lakes Region, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority 2009.

Marian has been a resident of Inkster, Michigan from 1954 to the present. Marian was preceded in death by her husband Abraham and her nephew Daroll. She leaves to cherish he rmemory her brothers, Dr. James Gilreath of Detroit, Clarence (Barbara) Gilreath, of Inkster, Ernest Gilreath of Inkster, Bernard Gilreath, of Arizona, and Raymond (Elizabeth) Gilreath of Inkster; brother-in-law Owens Donegan of West Bloomfield, and several nieces, nephews, as well as special friends Betty Thomas and Mable Stroman, Special caregivers were her nephews.
