Emma Cadwell Obituary

Emma Jean (Tate) Cadwell was born in Elberton, Georgia on May 18, 1929 to the Rev. John and Mayme Tate. She was the tenth child of fourteen children. The Tate family moved, in 193, to Inkster, Michigan and became members of Beulah Baptist Church where, she was a member of the choir with her sister Laura Mae. She received the Lord Jesus as her Savior, and along with her brothers and sisters, was raised in the fear and admonition of the Lord.

Emma attended Inkster Public Schools. In high school, she demonstrated leadership by being the secretary of her class. She graduated in 1948, as the salutatorian of her class with aspirations to become a dress designer.

She met army veteran Edsel Franklin Cadwell of Detroit, Michigan (originally from Cadwell, Georgia). Edsel and Emma were married in May of 1955 and four children were born to this union. Their wedding photo appeared on the front page of the Michigan Chronicle. Edsel and Emma decided to build a new home in Inkster. By faith, in the early 1970's the Cadwells moved into their new home, one of the first tri-level homes in Inkster and continued raising Tyrone, Darryl, Tanya and Devon.

Emma beautified her home inside and out with plants and flowers. Her flowers were legendary and together they planted and maintained three different gardens on and near the Cadwell property. Emma generously shared their harvest with family, friends and strangers.

Emma led a fulfilling, productive life. As a working mother, she worked for Inkster Public Schools for over twenty years as a paraprofessional in the classroom and a lunch aide. Emma was also a certified seamstress who taught an evening sewing class for senior citizens. As a member of Cathedral of Faith she was a devoted soul winner and Sunday school teacher.

Emma did everything with style and grace. She was the epitome of virtuous women. She was well-dressed woman and was known for her unique hats. Emma was an excellent cook and would often feed her family, especially for Sunday dinner. Among her specialties were her blueberry and sweet potato pies. Emma was a loving, faithful, devoted, supportive wife to her husband of 62 years.

Emma Jean Cadwell went to be with her Heavenly Father from the comfort of her home on Monday, May 8, 2017 in the care of her family.
