A precious baby girl was born to the late Frank and Hilda Rogers in Evansville, Indiana on December 16, 1932. She was to be their only child. Having been raised in the church, Dorothy was baptized at an early age at McFarland Baptist Church in Evansville and served there in her youth as the Sunday School Musician. Dorothy received her early education in the Evansville Public School System graduating Lincoln High School where she served as accompanist for their performance choir and played the French Horn in the band. Following graduation, she matriculated in Indiana University where she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and subsequently received her master's degree from the University of Michigan. Because of her great love for children, Dorothy pursued a career as an elementary school teacher in the Detroit Public Schools for 34 years until her retirement in 1998. Shortly after moving to Detroit, Dorothy met and married her lifeling companion of 63 years, James K. Garrett. They received as a gift from God, two loving children whom they cherished, Grindl Caprice Garrett (Gregory James Garrett who is now deceased). In 1965 they moved to Inkster and shortly thereafter joined St. Clement's Espiscopal Church. Dorothy loved her church and served in many capacities such as: Church Musician, Young Adult Choir Director, Youth Choir Director, Vestry Member, Bible School Teacher, Cub Scout Leader, YPF Advisor, Occasioal Lay Reader,UNCF Representative and Black History Month Coordinator.
