Darrell Phillips Obituary

Darrell Phillips was born October 9, 1955 in Detroit, MI to Elma Louise Benjamin and Henry Jennings who both transitioned before him. He as the second born of five children, James "Al" Phillips (preceded him in transition), Jacqueline "Jackie" Phillips (preceded in transition), and Charles "Chuckie" Phillips who also preceded him in transition and Bernice Phillips who currently resides in Belleville, MI.

Darrell received Christ at an early age, at Greater Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Aaron Blackmon where he attended church with his mother and family. He provided service in maintenance and worked closely with administration, being responsible for creating the Sunday programs.

Darrell was educated in Detroit Public Schools. After completing High School at Northwestern High, Darrell enrolled in Job Corps where he found his passion for Auto- mechanics and received his certificate of Completion in the Auto- Mechanic trade.

Darrell was eager to start a family with the love of his life, so he devised a plan in which he could serve his country and support his wife to be. He enlisted in the United States Army to fulfill the pledge of being all that he could be. While serving in in Korea Darrell worked as a Parts and Material Supply- man while pursing Military Education in the field Equipment Maintenance Administration. He was a decorated solider, receiving medals for both Good Conduct and Sharp Shooting. His tour included Germany and Korea. Darrell was Honorably Discharged in 1978. To commemorate his service he purchased a 1970 Oldsmobile 98 while in El Paso, Texas and drove home to Detroit, MI.

Darrell married Karen whom he lovingly referred to as "Baby" in 1978 and to this union was born four children. Darrell "DJ", Jason, and the twins Tracie and Stacie. Darrell worked as an assembly line worker at General Motors (Fleetwood) for ten years. While employed with GM he was honored for perfect attendance and even awarded a gold watch in recognition of his workmanship. He later decided to pursue his passion in the Automotive Industry where he became a certified Master Mechanic. He was highly revered mechanic and continued to work until he fell ill.

Darrell loved his entire family, over the course of forty years, teaching most of his nieces and nephews to drive. Darrell was a respected auto mechanic, he was regularly spotted with his legs hanging out from underneath a car. Some may even argue hat he left a greasy hand print on their wall at some point. He was a monumental figure in the family. A man known for his kindness, support and wise sayings. A quirky sense of humor, a language that only those who knew him best could understand and marched to his own drum. He was a man of strong faith, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He took pride in serving his God and his country. Truly he was a hero and a fighter. Against all odds, he kept his faith.
