Carmen Wilkes Obituary

Carmen Maria Massey Wilkes was born February 4, 1960 in Ann Arbor, Michigan the first born child to the union of the late Clarence and Ardella Brown Massey. Carmen accepted Christ as a young child and was baptized at the Pentecostal Love Non-Denominational Church in Sumpter, Michigan. She attended the Ypsilanti/Belleville Public Schools and later graduated from Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in Stockton, California.

Carmen was blessed with two beautiful & loving children her first born Damon Keith and a few years later came Symira DeShonne. Carmen's employment included lottery facilitator, licensed bartender and a car sales person. She was an avid reader and "passionate" card player! You would not want to be her opponent in any game of spades, dominos or bid whist! She was very much her father's child!

In 1989, she met and married Martin Douglas, they divorced and she later met James Wilkes. On August 17, 2002 they were married in a beautiful, windy outdoor ceremony at Eastern Michigan Amphitheater.

In 2004, her world was shattered by the untimely loss of her daughter Symira who left behind two beautiful children of her own, Denise and Mychael, Carmen soon became the guardian for Denise.

A few years later, the family relocated to LaGrange, GA. Time passed and she was diagnosed with cancer. Her son Damon was truly her angel, morning, noon, and night, totaling supporting his precious mother. There was absolutely nothing he wouldn't do to put a smile on her face!

And finally, on the evening of October 1, 2018, Carmen boarded that Old Ship of Zion that has landed many thousand. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Symira; parents Clarence and Ardella Massey; brother Clarence (brother/cousin) Kalvin Lethel Riley; maternal grandparents John and Symira Brown; paternal grandmother Johnny Mae Minor and three uncles; Alfred, Alfonzo, and Joseph Massey.

Left to cherish her memory are those who loved her most: her husband James Wilkes; loving son Damon Massey; granddaughters; Denise and Mychael; one great-grandson Kace; three brothers. John Hollyfield, Tracy Nelson (Sherina) and Theodore Massey III; two sisters Debra Hawkins (Victor) and Lena Johnston (Jermaine); one special aunt Adessa Riley' step mother LeVerta Massey; one uncle Theodore Massey II (Betty); four very special cousins who were more like siblings; Denise, Kevin, Delores, and Deveron ("the Riley's") and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Special Thanks: We would especially like to thank Carmen's caregiver Peaches and the medical staff from the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
