Bertha Mayfield Obituary

Berta Lee Mayfield was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi on April 14, 19269 to Pearl and Frank Perkins. Bertha passed away peacefully Monday, February 3, 2020 surrounded by her family.

Berta or "Bert", as known by her family and friends, came to Detroit, Michigan in 1946. She attended Wayne State University and graduated with a Secretarial Science Degree. While attending Wayne State University, she met the love of her life, Mack Mayfield, and they were married on December 27, 1947. To this union two children were born, Macklyn Mayfield and William Mayfield. In 1957 they bought a home and moved their family to Westland, Michigan. Berta worked at a job that she loved as a legal secretary, at Ford Motor Company until she retired in 1988. Berta accepted Christ at an early age and in 1961 she and Mack joined The Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Westland, Michigan. Berta loved helping others, which was evident through her volunteer work with agencies such as: The American Red Cross, Henry Ford Hospital-Dearborn, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen-Detroit. Berta also enjoyed cooking, sewing, and entertaining her family and friends.

Berta's mother and father, brothers R.J., Scott, Audrey Perkins and Will Henry Perkins, and sister Ethel Collins preceded her in death.

Berta leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Mack Mayfield, her children, Macklyn and William (Darlene) Mayfield, her sisters and brothers, Frank Perkins Jr. and Gwen Buxton, Gloria Sellers, and Donald Perkins, her grandchildren, Norman (Jade) Baker, LaTonya Mayfield, Marquis (Monica) Scott, Dionna (Corey) Frederick, Nicole (Kasine) Powers, and Bernard Evans, her great grandchildren, Nathan, Tera, Destiny, Guam, Nasir, Madison, Naimah, Mackenzie, Maiya, Giana, Olivia, and Kaleah, and her great great grand child, Naheem and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
