Alvin Holmes Obituary

Alvin Holmes quietly left us to meet his Lord and Savior on Wednesday Morning June 21st 2017. Alvin was born on November 6, 1940 in Newport News, Virginia; he was the second child of 4 children born to the late Daniel Holmes Sr. and Elnora Dinkins Holmes.

Al was educated in the public schools of Virginia, graduating in 1958. After graduation he joined the Air Force where he served as an Air Force Policeman (Texas) he served until August 1965 were he received an honorable discharge. After his discharge he returned home, but unable to find work he moved to Washington DC and was hired as a Police Officer. Needing a career change Alvin located to Detroit Michigan were he found employment with Ford Motor Company for 32 years retiring as a Supervisor of the Material/Handling Department at the Dearborn Assembly Plant in 1998. During his career he attended Schoolcraft College taking courses in Business. While working at Ford he met and married Delores Dinwiddie they had three beautiful children, Adrian, Rhena and Rissa. After years of marriage, they peacefully departed their union. He later reunited with a childhood friend Lady Betty J. Clarke, from Virginia, they united in holy matrimony on July 6, 1985 blending their two families together, (Gregory, Elanda, Lillie) they shared an unbreakable commitment to one another through God's Grace Mercy and Love, for 32 years 11 months an 15 days.

Alvin found God's grace at an early age an was baptized. Al was always very active in his church home. He joined Gethsemane Missionary Baptist church in 1985 where he served, singing in the Mass Choir and Male Chorus. He taught Sunday School, and the New Disciple classes. He was ordained a Deacon, under the pastorate of the late Rev. W.W. Davis. He served on many ministry and organizations at Gethsemane and St. James during his tenure, until being affected with Alzheimer's.

Al was a member of St. Luke No. 31 Associate International Supreme Council of World Masons Incorporated where he served as the Chapter Treasurer. He enjoyed bowling, music and traveling, Al and Betty traveled extensively going on 16 cruises, traveling to 46 states including Hawaii as well as a majority of Canada and Europe. He enjoyed inspiring others, through his words of wisdom. He was well versed in all phases of political issues and sports, Football, Tennis, Golf, Baseball and Basketball including all College Teams, turning a ten minute conversation into hours of laughter and fun.

Alvin leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife The Lady Betty J. Holmes, two sons, Adrian (Janelle), Gregory Freeman, of Newport News, VA. four daughters, Elanda Geter (Brain), Lillie Clarke-Mason (Larry). Rhena and Rissa, five granddaughters, 8 grandsons, 4 great granddaughters, 4 great grandsons, 2 brothers Daniel L. Holmes (Jean) of Temple Hill, Maryland, James Holmes of Seattle, Washington, one Sister Pearl Holmes-Tolliver of Maryland, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
