Edsel Cadwell Obituary

Edsel Franklin Cadwell was born in Laurens County, Georgia on November 23, 1925. He was the fifth of eight children born to James and Annie (Burch) Cadwell. He was in the rural town of Cadwell. Georgia. In those days, the town of Cadwell was comprised of many members of the extended Cadwell and Burch families. Faith and family were among the most important values that were instilled in Edsel. A worth ethic was also instilled in him as he was growing up, by way of his father. Edsel was an obedient child. His father trusted him at a young age to ride the wagon of cotton into town to receive money for it. Edsel was educated in Cadwell, Georgia. He received and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior at a young age. Following the passing of his mother at a young age, he grew into manhood under the strong and solid guidance of his father, aunts and uncles whom he loved dearly. A the age of 20, Edsel joined and served in to U.S. Army during the second World War. During this period he was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Sometime after moving to Detroit, Edsel met and married Emma Jean Tate of Inkster, MI. They were married in May of 1955. Emma was a genuine helpmate, who loved and supported him throughout their 62 years together. For years they resided in the Delray neighborhood of Detroit where various other family members lived also. Edsel and Emma worked and raised their four children, Tyrone, Darryl, Tanya, and Devon. Amusingly, Edsel had several nicknames. Most of his family called him "Date". Emma called him "Shaggy-head". His brothers also referred to him as "Studgin". Others have even called him "Gobbler". Someone also nicknames him, "Pavarotti", because of his resemblance to the Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti. In the early 1970's, the Lord blessed Edsel and Emma to build a new home in Inkster, MI where Emma grew up. For years, Edsel worked and maintained there different gardens after the move to Inkster. Gardening was one his talents and passions. He planted some of the best looking and tastiest gardens that you could eat from. For many years, Edsel grew and harvested produce from his gardens that he shared with family, friends, neighbors, and strangers. He also worked with his wife to planted flowers on their property, which was one of her hobbies. Edsel and Emma generously opened their home for family reunions, family get-togethers, birthdays, etc. They also hosted two weddings (one in the front yard and one in the backyard)! Edsel and Emma, along with their four children became members of the Cathedral of Faith under the Pastorship of the late Bishop J. Herbert Hinkle. Edsel was a faithful member for over four decades. After the Aaron and Hur Men's Ministry was established at the church, Edsel became part of the male chorus. He also helped with the church flower gardens. After the passing of Bishop Hinkle, he remained a faithful member under the leadership of it's new pastor, Lee A. Jackson. During this time, he was honored with the Men of Positive Purpose award. In his pastime, he enjoyed various activities and the simple things in life. Edsel was a talented baseball player. He was an amazing homerun hitter! There were those who felt that he had the talent to be a professional baseball player. He also loved fishing, watching sports, eating a good meal, making homemade sausage, and wine. Edsel was a good man. The values of faith and family that he was taught in Cadwell, Georgia as a young, he continued in that over the years. He was blessed with physical strength and stamina that lasted throughout his life. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Also, he has a solid, loyal relationship with his siblings. Most importantly, he was born-again Christian. After Edsel and Emma's retirement, they were blessed to spend their golden years together by doing different things that they both enjoyed. One was to travel annually to Cadwell, Georgia with family members. During these years, they were apart of a senior citizen social group called the Inkster Friendship Club. They were blessed to spend quality time and Sunday dinners with their family and friends. A highlight of their year was the Cadwell-Burch family reunion that has been held every year during the summer since 1962. His brothers, Rollie Lee, Horace, Hughes, Marrell and Lindburgh; sister, Flora preceded him in death. His beloved wife of over 62 years, Emma Jean Cadwell passed in May of 2017. Following that, in July of 2017, his son Darryl Cadwell passed as well.
